Lester M. Benjamin letters and articles, 1935-1973.

The collection includes a letter, 1935, from Lester Benjamin to Harry Seamans concerning conditions in China he's observed while a member of the Pacific Area Exchange Students group in the Penn State in China program; an excerpt of a letter, 1937, written by Penn State exchange student, Thomas Bolster, the only American student to remain at Lingnan University under war conditions; and an excerpt of a letter, 1936, from G. Weidman Groff to W.A. Broyles about agriculture in China and the Penn State program. Also, includes a clipping about Benjamin's experiences in China, two issues of The Shofer (February and October 1936) in which Benjamin writes of his year in the Orient, and correspondence, 1973, between Benjamin and the Penn State Office of Research and Graduate Study.

Groff, George Weidman, 1884-1954

George Weidman Groff received his bachelor's and master's degrees in horticulture from Penn State. He pioneered the idea of agricultural missions under Christian auspices and in 1907 became the first agricultural missionary to China. In 1921, he helped organize the Lingnan Agricultural College with a faculty of western-trained Chinese.
